Description

Hooker's lyrical approach is more like what you would expect from a jazz musician - he literally improvises on the fly, taking any subject and changing the shape of the words to instantly paint a picture. 'I Got Eyes For You' is a great example of improvised singing. Hooker never uses a plectrum on his right hand - only his bare fingers produce the sound that creates such a driving energy in each of his performances. His thumb is his bass finger, which he uses exclusively to play amazing walking bass lines and countermelodies in the low register, while his index finger does the heavy lifting for all the single note solo lines, as can be heard on 'Grinder Man'.
Recorded by Bernard Besman between 1948 and 1952 for the Sensation label, this unique collection of songs captures the unique style of John Lee Hooker that changed the soundscape of American music forever.
