Description
For the latest label spotlight in the 'This Is' series - after acclaimed looks at Flying Dutchman and Fame - the Ace makers focus on Goldwax, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, and present the best recordings made during the soul label's short existence.
The compilation not only puts James Carr in the spotlight, but also his important label mate Spencer Wiggins or the beautiful harmonies of the Ovations. These three acts were the mainstays of Goldwax and, alongside the songwriting talents of George Jackson and Dan Greer, show why the label's influence is still important today. A catalogue full of gems, from the earliest recordings of 'Why Can't We Live Together' hitmaker Timmy Thomas to rarely recorded artists such as Philip & The Faithfuls. This compilation also shows how strong the Memphis club and studio scene was at the time, with recordings by Willie Walker, Percy Milem, Barbara Perry, Gene 'Bowlegs' Miller and others who recorded sporadically but were popular live performers. 'This is Goldwax' comes with a fully illustrated booklet with liner notes by Dean Rudland. A perfect introduction to the label at the start of its seventh decade.
