Description

1967. The Summer of Love. Groundbreaking albums like "Surrealistic Pillow", "The Velvet Underground & Nico", "Their Satanic Majesties Request" and of course "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" liberated millions of young people from the bondage of philistinism, forcing the most powerful hi-fi loudspeakers mercilessly on their knees and turn the history of rock music upside down several times. After that, the world is no longer what it was before. And what is happening in Austria? March music, folk songs, hits and tame dance bands characterize the sound of the time. Only a few young avant-gardists have dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to rock-n-roll. Of these, only very few make it out of the obscurity onto larger stages or even into a recording studio.
The Beatniks, originally from Carinthia, on the other hand, as pioneers from the very beginning, already had a few wild years behind them in 1967. Since the early 1960s, the six-piece combo has made a name for itself as a first-class live band and has performed a good 1000 times. Fixed commitments in the hottest clubs of Vienna and numerous tours in Austria strengthen the excellent reputation of the group. They are considered to be the biggest beat band in the Alps far beyond the country's borders.
"That's not what the beatniks say. That's what the connoisseurs say." the German pop magazine BRAVO states laconically in this regard. After bandleader Werner Marinell managed to negotiate a contract with the record company Polydor in 1966, after a few very successful singles, they were accoladed: the Beatniks were commissioned to record an LP with their own material for the major label. A real sensation for the time. However, what the band makes of this opportunity is also sensational. Despite enormous time pressure and a low budget, the six young musicians work hard and shoot a formidable freakbeat grenade on tape in just two days. Unfortunately, "On A Blue Day" didn't become a bestseller and is now one of the hardest-to-find releases in Austrian rock history. But even half a century later, this fabulous melange of beat, garage, pop and psychedelic rock still inspires.
Wild, weird and full of crazy joy of playing, no Austrian beat record in the Summer of Love came closer to "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".

The cut for this re-release was - 100% analogue - taken from the original mother tape. The cover has been faithfully restored, and an extensive booklet tells the story of the Beatniks, supplemented by great images from the band archive.
