Another remarkable entry in the Panja Records Jamaican Beat Kayo reissue series, this rare release revives two long-lost recordings by Michiko Hamamura, the legendary “Queen Calypso” of Japan’s postwar exotica movement. Blending Caribbean rhythm with Showa-era pop culture, these beautifully restored tracks document the early fascination with Jamaican and calypso sounds in 1950s and 60s Japan.
The A-side features “Mama Look A Boo Boo,” Hamamura’s vibrant interpretation of the classic calypso tune made famous by Lord Melody, later known to reggae fans through versions by The Marvels. On the flip, “Born In Jamaica” resurfaces a near-mythical 1965 recording unavailable for decades.
Essential for collectors of Japanese rare grooves, calypso, exotica, ska, and vintage Caribbean-inspired sounds, this historic reissue is a true archival treasure.
