Johnny Cash. San Francisco. 1968. The concert history nearly forgot. On April 24, 1968 the same year as At Folsom Prison Johnny Cash played the Carousel Ballroom for a young, alternative San Francisco crowd in a venue run by members of Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead. Looser, rawer, and more experimental than his prison recordings, this show captures Cash at his most spontaneous: opening with "Cocaine Blues", duetting with June Carter on "Jackson", covering Bob Dylan ("One Too Many Mornings", "Don't Think Twice"), and delivering a devastating "Ballad of Ira Hayes". The Tennessee Three at their hypnotic best. Restored by the Owsley Stanley Foundation and released in 2021 as part of Bear's Sonic Journals with liner notes by John Carter Cash. Essential for Johnny Cash, Country, and Americana collectors. New 2LP. Available now at Copasetic Mailorder.
