The Bootleggers were four Katz from Luton, a small town north of Lundon. We all jumped on the Rockin scene that exploded in England in the late seventies absorbing all those American sounds that were being discovered and brought over to Britain on vinyl back then.
Kevin Foley and Steve Strapps were the originators of the band who were playing guitars and Kev also the harmonica, they were experimenting bringing all the roots Rockin sounds from Rock a Billy and country Blues together. Renzo Bartoli was an early vocalist and the band tried several Upright Bass players but nothing really took off. Bill Tookey was an up and coming vocalist who had caught the eye of local promoters and had been fronting the more traditional Rock n Roll bands backed by more seasoned, well-travelled musicians. After the untimely death of his promoter he started looking for a style to better express himself and make the most of his talent and started rehearsals with Kevin and Steve. Renzo, who had never played Bass before was given a few lessons by Steve, and started rehearsing as well. The Bootleggers were playing a mix of early Rock a Billy lesser known tunes, Country Blues numbers and self-penned songs all mixed up with their own energetic twist. Drums never seemed to be an essential part of the sound so Bill, standing up front singing, would bang out the beat on a snare drum. The Bootleggers started playing local clubs and were supported by Boogie Dell Richardson, an established Disc Jockey, who gave them gigs on the London scene, All-dayers and supporting Sun Legend Jimmy Wages on his London gig at the Cherry Tree. Dell and Roy Williams also recorded tracks by the Bootleggers and Dell issued several tracks on his Compillation LPs. The band finally broke up when Bill won a National televised singing competition and was immediately signed with a professional agency and left Luton to sing around the world at bigger more prestigious venues…
