Since the 1920s, the Caribbean has been not only a paradise for smugglers and gangsters, but also a favorite destination for numerous US tourists who found a nightlife on the islands that rivaled that of their larger home cities. Local musical styles, often played by bands in the bars of early hotel complexes, aroused great interest, leading to dance trends like the Carioca and Conga in the US as early as the 1930s.
Later, Calypso took the mainland by storm. The jazz and rhythm and blues artists of the 1940s and 50s welcomed this development with open ears, while their Caribbean counterparts were already influenced by US jazz and swing, as well as modern musical instruments and band formations. So it is no wonder that music emerged which gleefully crossed the boundaries between African American and Caribbean styles.
